Sunflowers 4 Ways

9/2/2016

The sunflower is one of the cheeriest, most summery flowers I can think of. What better flower to use, to celebrate the last days of summer? I’ve come up with 4 ways to use sunflowers in easy every-day arrangements. Give one a try and share your #septembersunflower design on Instagram or Facebook.

1. Simple:  Three sunflowers in a small jar or vase make the perfect bathroom or bedside table accent.
Picture
Recipe:  3 sunflowers, 1 mason jar, twine or ribbon
2. Traditional Vase Bouquet
Picture
Recipe: 1 medium vase, clear floral tape (optional), 2 stems tall eucalyptus 5 sunflowers, 5 mum stems, 5 alstroemeria stems, 2 stems seeded eucalyptus

Aim to make a round dome shape as you add each element.
  1. Make a tick-tack-toe grid with the clear floral tape (optional)
  2. Add tall eucalyptus stems.
  3. Place 4 of the sunflowers facing out, like 4 compass points. Place the 5th sunflower in the center.
  4. Follow the same pattern with the mums and alstroemeria, placing one stem of each between your sunflowers and one in the center.
  5. Finish your arrangement with eucalyptus spilling from the edges.

Tip: you can use a thin floral wire to have a little more control over the angle of your sunflower heads. Pierce the head from the bottom of the flower. It should go through the head, but not beyond, so there’s no visible wire showing on the face of the sunflower. Wrap the rest of the wire down the stem. Carefully adjust the angle of the flower head.

3. Sunny Bowl: A ceramic or wood bowl is just right for a single sunflower
Materials: small bowl, 1 sunflower
4. Creative Pitcher: Play with negative space and movement with a single sunflower and arching accent greens or flowers.

or whatever you want to play with!

What size is the mason jar? 16oz or Quart sized? Also, do you know the size of the bowls? Thanks!

Hi Jessica - I believe I used a 16 oz jar. The bowl size can vary, but generally look for a bowl with an opening that is a half inch wider than the sunflower head. The wood bowl I used was a side salad bowl from a wooden salad set. The opening diameter was about 6." Hope that helps!
