Last week I attended the Detroit Flower Week presented by Lisa Waud, owner of Pot and Box and artist behind the Detroit Flower House project. To say the week was inspiring is an understatement. I got to see demonstrations and lectures from some of the best floral designers in the world including Josef Massie, Ariella Chezar, Holly Chapple and Emily Thompson. I sold my vertical gardens at the event and even got to talk to Farmgirl Flowers owner Christina Stembel (this is an amazing company if you haven’t heard of it!). The highlight of the week was Lisa’s overview of the Detroit Flower House. If you’ve never heard of this remarkable project, please check it out.

The sunflower is one of the cheeriest, most summery flowers I can think of. What better flower to use, to celebrate the last days of summer? I’ve come up with 4 ways to use sunflowers in easy every-day arrangements. Give one a try and share your #septembersunflower design on Instagram or Facebook. 1. Simple: Three sunflowers in a small jar or vase make the perfect bathroom or bedside table accent. Recipe: 3 sunflowers, 1 mason jar, twine or ribbon 2. Traditional Vase Bouquet Recipe: 1 medium vase, clear floral tape (optional), 2 stems tall eucalyptus 5 sunflowers, 5 mum stems, 5 alstroemeria stems, 2 stems seeded eucalyptus Aim to make a round dome shape as you add each element.
Tip: you can use a thin floral wire to have a little more control over the angle of your sunflower heads. Pierce the head from the bottom of the flower. It should go through the head, but not beyond, so there’s no visible wire showing on the face of the sunflower. Wrap the rest of the wire down the stem. Carefully adjust the angle of the flower head. 3. Sunny Bowl: A ceramic or wood bowl is just right for a single sunflower Materials: small bowl, 1 sunflower 4. Creative Pitcher: Play with negative space and movement with a single sunflower and arching accent greens or flowers. Recipe: pitcher, 1 sunflower, 3 roses or other secondary flower, 1-2 stems tall eucalyptus
or whatever you want to play with! Since moving to Michigan, I've been using Meetup and other sites to find new things to do. I found a sunset relaxation nature hike for my date night with Alex. We met with a group of about 15 and hiked through a wetland reserve. The leader stopped several times to teach us relaxation exercises. One of my favorite exercises we did and one that I’ve been practicing lately is a sensory meditation. Focusing on one sense at a time, especially outdoors, calms the wild mind. Try this meditation this month if you need a quiet moment to reset your day.
